After 30 professional fights and more than five years of competition, veteran fighter Anthony Ruiz (20-10) has gotten the "big" contract every seasoned veteran hopes to land.

The 30-year-old Ruiz and the California-based Strikeforce organization recently inked a six-fight deal that could be worth up to nearly $150,000. It also promises Ruiz an immediate title shot and the possibility of fighting in a $100,000 four-man light-heavyweight tournament later this year.

Ruiz spoke to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) earlier today about that contract, his upcoming title shot, why a rumored deal with the UFC never panned out, and his recent string of success.

Ruiz, a Team Voodoo fighter, last fought for Strikeforce back in November and defeated world light heavyweight champion Bobby Southworth with a second-round TKO. Unfortunately for Ruiz, it was a non-title fight.

"The last time we fought, the day of the fight, we made [Strikeforce officials] add that into the contract -- that I'd get a title shot if I beat him," said Ruiz, who never got a clear answer on why the first bout wasn't for the belt.

Although the fight hasn't been announced and contracts haven't been signed, Ruiz said he and Southworth have agreed to meet at Strikeforce's June 27 event, which takes place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. MMAjunkie.com first reported the Southworth-Ruiz fight last week.

The contract that led to the upcoming title fight first came about in January, when Ruiz emerged as a possible opponent for David Heath at UFC 81. Ruiz confirmed he was in negotiations with the UFC but ultimately was offered a better deal with Strikeforce.

"(UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva called me, and he offered a four-fight contract, and that (deal) would only be worth about $80,000 at most," he said. "Sometimes the UFC -- they'll use you as a stepping stone, and if they want, they can cancel the contract whenever they want to.

"We know the owners of Strikeforce and had fought for them, so we threw it out to them, and they came back with a better deal for me."

Ruiz, who said he'd still like to fight for the UFC someday, said the Strikeforce offer was just too good to pass up. In addition to the title fight with Southworth, Ruiz will also be able to compete outside the organization with EliteXC, Rumble on the Rock, and other promotions that Strikeforce approves.

Additionally, if he wins the title in June, Ruiz said he could be a part of a possible four-man light heavyweight tournament.

"There's word that toward the end of the end of the year, there could be a tournament, and if I'm the champion, I put [the belt] on the line," Ruiz said. "They're talking about getting Babalu (Renato Sobral), (Vitor) Belfort and Kevin Randleman. The winner would get $100,000. I'd love to compete in that... but they're still just planning it right now."

Strikeforce hosted a four-man middleweight tournament back in November, and Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker has mentioned he'd like to do another one this year.

Although he admitted it wouldn't be an easy feat, Ruiz said he's welcome the challenge of the tournament. Confidence has been in abundant supply lately as Ruiz has pieced together a six-fight win streak -- with 11 victories in his past 13 fights. He most recently defeated UFC veteran and "The Ultimate Fighter 2" runner-up Brad Imes at a January Palace Fighting Championships event. Ruiz gave up 70 pounds in the fight but still managed a split-decision victory.

"It's all about experience," Ruiz said. "It's just that I've been in there so many times that I'm really able to think and use my brain... Early in my career, I'd go on a rage. I'd come out there charging and swinging 100 percent when I should have been playing a smart game. I know I just need to outsmart them now."

Ruiz, who also serves as an assistant high school wrestling coach and a seasonal fireman battling California wildfires, said he ultimately wants to retire on top. Then, he'd like to either turn to broadcasting or running his own fight team.

"I really love the sport, and I want to remain a part of it," said Ruiz. "Luckily, my sponsors CagesideMMA.com, Respek Fightwear, Toe2Toe and KO Dynasty keep me going for now.

"But I'd really like to run my own fight team with my own guys someday. I'd also like to be a commentator. I've known the sport for a long time. I know just about every move you'll see, and I'm pretty good at being a people's person. If I grow out my hair, I think I could look like a decent human being. I'm just going for the tough-guy look now."

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited two Massachusetts contractors for alleged violations of safety standards at a Concord construction site and proposed combined penalties totaling $120,200.

OSHA's inspection of a McDonald's restaurant construction site at 117 Loudon Road found employees of Shawnlee Construction, a Plainville, Mass., roofing contractor, exposed to fall hazards. Employees of James T. Lynch Contractors Inc., a Reading, Mass., excavation contractor, were found to be exposed to cave-in hazards. Shawnlee faces a total of $96,500 in proposed fines and Lynch a total of $23,700 in proposed fines.

"These are two of the deadliest, yet most preventable, hazards in construction work," said Rosemarie Ohar, OSHA's area director in Concord. "Failing to ensure that the proper safeguards are in place and in use needlessly exposes employees to death or serious injuries from falls or being buried in a cave-in."

Specifically, Shawnlee employees were found to be working atop 15-foot high trusses without fall protection and were not adequately trained in anchoring their fall protection lifelines. These conditions resulted in two repeat citations, carrying $82,500 in proposed fines. OSHA had cited Shawnlee in 2005, 2006 and 2007 for similar conditions at work sites in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Shawnlee also has been issued two serious citations, with $12,000 in fines, for lack of eye protection for employees using nail guns and improper use of fall protection harnesses and lanyards. Two other-than-serious citations, with $2,000 in fines, were issued for the company's failure to maintain and provide the illness and injury log in a timely manner.

Employees of James T. Lynch Contractors were observed working in a 7-foot deep excavation that lacked adequate protection against a collapse of its sidewalls. This finding has resulted in one willful citation, carrying a $21,000 fine. Lynch also has been issued three serious citations, with $2,700 in fines, for an access ladder of insufficient height and for lack of a hazard communication program and training for its employees.

Each company has 15 business days from receipt of its citations to meet with OSHA or to contest them before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

The State rate was 8.7%, so you can clearly see there is work to be done to reduce the number of low birth weight babies in Jackson County. The Premature birth rate for babies born before 37 weeks gestation was 16.1% with the State rate of 14.1%*. We have to keep them baking in mothers oven for as long as we can; God put babies in the oven for 40 weeks with reason! The goal of Chipola Healthy Start is to ensure that mothers give birth to healthy, full term infants and those infants remain healthy from birth to age three.
Healthy Start is open to all pregnant women in Florida or to women of infants from birth to age three. Florida Statues mandate physicians to screen pregnant women for risks associated with infant death or to evaluate whether or not a woman is at risk to deliver a low birth baby. After a woman has answered the questions about their risks, physicians will "score" the screen. Women who have a score of four or more on their Healthy Start Prenatal Screen will then be referred for services.
If the pregnant woman does not score into the program, but would like services, they can either self-refer or if the physician feels that a service, like childbirth education, would be beneficial then a referral for services can be made from that provider and services can begin. Healthy Start provides information to pregnant women to reduce the possibility of infant death to low birth weight babies. These services can include breastfeeding how-tos with support, car seat safety, and good nutrition before, during and after pregnancy, safe sleeping practices for your infant and help with coping skills for new parents. Your income level is not taken into consideration for Healthy Start services. Pregnant women of all ages, ethnic groups and income levels are welcome.
Infant deaths are extremely difficult for families to endure. We believe that infant deaths happen far too often. If you or someone you know has experienced such a loss, you know this is true. Chipola Healthy Start has a program that looks at individual infant death cases in Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty and Washington Counties.
Each case is addressed to find social, economic or physical factors that can attribute to infants deaths within our communities. The program titled, Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) meets with medical professionals, community support services, and social programs in efforts to reduce the number of deaths for our rural population. But with smoking rates being almost four times that of the State, poor eating habits associated with obesity and lack of early and consistent medical care in the first trimester, we are seeing little results from outreach to our communities.
